Chinese investigators join probe into attack on nationals in Pakistan

Chinese investigators arrived in Pakistan to assist in the investigation of the recent killing of five Chinese nationals in a suicide attack, announced Pakistan’s interior ministry.

The attacks pose a threat to Islamabad’s efforts to modernize its economy, especially considering China’s significant investments, totaling over $65 billion, in infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road initiative.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, met with the Chinese investigators at the embassy in Beijing to provide updates on the investigation.

This collaboration follows a joint investigation initiated in late 2022 after previous attacks targeting Chinese nationals and interests.

No group has claimed responsibility for the recent attack, where a suicide bomber targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers working on a hydropower project in Dasu, Pakistan.

This incident comes after attacks on a strategic port in Balochistan on March 20 and a naval air base on March 25, both claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).

Although Dasu has been targeted before, with a bus blast in 2021, no group claimed responsibility for that attack either. In response to the recent attack, Chinese contractors have temporarily halted work on three hydropower projects due to security concerns.

Pakistan has established a specialized security force comprising police and military personnel to ensure the safety of Chinese projects in the country.
