Comedian Munawar Zarif being remembered on death anniversary today

Today, on the 48th anniversary of his death, the versatile comedian Munawar Zarif is being fondly remembered for his contributions to the film industry.

Hailing from Gujranwala, Zarif, born on December 25, 1940, was renowned for pioneering the trend of comedy heroes in local cinema during the 1970s, earning the title of “Shehenshah-i-Zarafat” from his admirers.

His cinematic journey began with the Punjabi film “Dandian” in 1961, with his breakthrough role coming in “Hath Jori.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Zarif starred in over 300 movies, showcasing his comedic genius alongside fellow luminaries such as Ali Ejaz, Nanha, Rangeela, Laheri, and Albela.

His collaborations with Rangeela produced iconic films like “Rangeela Aur Munawar Zareef,” setting a new standard for comedy heroes in the industry.

Zarif’s exceptional talent and improvisational skills left an indelible mark on the film landscape, inspiring future generations of comedians including Umer Sharif, Moin Akhter, and Sohail Ahmed.

Despite battling kidney-related illness, Zarif’s legacy endures, with his memorable roles in classics like “Heer Ranjah” continuing to captivate audiences.

His untimely passing in Lahore on April 29, 1976, at the age of 35, marked the loss of a comedic icon, but his influence lives on, immortalized in the annals of Pakistani cinema.
