Dune, cinematic enigma unraveled

Dune is a Warner Brothers production. It has received a rating of 8.2/10. With a runtime of 2 hours and 35 minutes, it falls into the genre of action, adventure and drama. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the protagonists are Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) Paul Atreides (Timothe Chalamot), and Chani (Zendaya). Leto Atriede is Paul’s father and the ruler of Arrakis.

The plot is convoluted. The film is set in the midst of a desert on a planet called Arrakis. The cinematic experience is amazing. It is definitely a film to be seen on the big screen. Its sequel Dune 2 is set for release on February 25th 2024.

‘Dune’ is a science fiction classic about a young nobleman, Paul Atreides, who rises to lead a desert army in a battle for control of a planet’s valuable spice. It explores themes of politics, religion, ecology, and the human experience.

From the script writing to the costume design and background music Dune is a real thriller.
Dune is a masterpiece. Maybe one of the best space films ever made. Just like Star Wars, Dune steals the show as well.

Based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel- Dune-it is a futuristic geopolitical allegory. It means that fictional characters and events are used to pass satire on real-life geopolitical situations.

Arakis is a desert and beautiful when the sun is low. The Fremen are people of the desert. They are adapted to survive and share the deep desert. They are dangerous and unreliable. A war is going on at Arakis and the emperor wants to bring peace to the planet.
Paul, son of Atremedias and Jessica has visions and nightmares. He sees people die. When his heart beats fast Jessica brings a doctor to check his vitals. However, Paul knows it’s not an allergic reaction. It’s the visions he has.

In the meanwhile Jessica takes Paul to the Reverend Mother to test his level of endurance. Jessica is a fierce and enigmatic woman. Jessica tells him to obey the voice. She tells him not to let his fears rule. ‘I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.’ On the other end, Jessica finally owns the crystal the maker of the deep desert. It is the truth of Shah Huldid.

The desert takes the weak’ The evil forces are convinced that no one can survive the storm of the desert and that the good forces have been annihilated. They are all dead. That is certain. The desert isn’t kind to humans.

The mystery of life isn’t a problem to be solved. but a reality to experience.
Towards the end of the film, Chani makes an appearance. She comes forward as a friend who will help Paul and Jessica find their way through the desert.
The director gives a hint of a romance erupting between Chani and Paul. This is an instance of rejoicing in the otherwise grave film.

As Paul struggles to protect her mother and himself he kills Jamis in the process.
Jessica is shocked because Paul has never killed a man. Therein begins a story of revenge. A life for a life, an eye for an eye is what the Fremens demand.
Paul in a flashback remembers his father who fought for the strength of the people and not for the riches or spice.

As Chani leads them out of the desert the film wraps up with the dialogue:
‘This is only the beginning of showing desert power.’

On the whole, a great film. Despite its long runtime, it keeps the audience engaged for the length of the time. A fantastic sci-fi film that captivates the attention of the viewer. It is a different sort of sci-fi-an amalgam of reality and imagination. Hats off to the cast and crew for coming up with a unique storyline! Kudos! Don’t miss out on it if you still haven’t seen it. Keep a watch out for part 2! The film promises a good sequel.
