French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that European states should limit their reliability on the United States.

He also urged European states to have more reliability in the NATO alliance.

Speaking in Jordan Macron said, “I don’t see his push to develop European defence as an alternative to NATO.”

According to reports, Macron stated that a more powerful Europe will enable the region to act within NATO, with NATO, but also not depending on NATO, it will be increasing its autonomy within the military alliance.

“An alliance isn’t something I should depend on. It’s something that I should choose, something I work with. We must rethink our strategic autonomy,” the French PM said.

He asserted that Europe needs to have more technological and military independence, even from the US.

His comments followed Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s meeting with US President Joe Biden in Washington and his Wednesday address to Congress, in which he thanked lawmakers for their financial assistance and described it as not charity but rather an investment.

A $1.85 billion military aid package for Ukraine was previously announced by Biden.
