A group of industry chiefs and experts gave a global call to address the risks posed by Artificial intelligence (AI). During a meeting held in Paris, industrialists urged policymakers to prioritize the reduction of AI-related risks, placing them on par with pandemics and nuclear war.

The non-profit Centre for AI Safety (CAIS) published a letter stating, “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

This letter was signed by over 350 experts, dozens of specialists, CEOs of AI firms such as DeepMind and Anthropic, OpenAI(represented by Sam Altman), and, executives from Microsoft and Google.

Notable professors from renowned institutions like Harvard and Tsinghua University, as well as, Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, two of the three “Godfathers of AI”, who received the 2018 Turing Award, were present.

CAIS released a statement aimed at initiating a dialogue on the potential dangers of AI without providing specific details about the threats.

The statement from CAIS singled out Meta, where the third godfather of AI, Yann LeCun, works, for not signing the letter. CAIS letter coincided with AI regulation discussions held at the US-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting in Sweden.

Elon Musk, a group of AI experts and industry executives was the first one to highlight the risks of AI to society.

One criticism is that algorithms can be trained on biased material, perpetuating racism, sexism, or political biases.
