Exploring pre-workout marijuana trend, benefits and effects on exercise

In America, there’s a growing trend among gym enthusiasts: incorporating marijuana into their pre-workout routines.

While cannabis remains illegal in Pakistan, gym-goers in the US are embracing its use to enhance their exercise experiences. A recent study delved into the effects of cannabis on exercise among 42 runners, revealing intriguing findings.

Participants reported heightened positive emotions, enjoyment, and alleviation of runners’ discomfort post-consumption. However, contrary to expectations, marijuana didn’t contribute to performance enhancement; instead, some runners faced challenges even during moderate workouts.

What’s the connection between marijuana and exercise? Cannabis contains two primary compounds: THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol). THC, responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects, induces mind-altering sensations. Conversely, CBD, although non-addictive and non-psychoactive, offers numerous medical benefits, as highlighted by psychiatrist Dr. Sarthak Dave. Despite its therapeutic potential, marijuana’s impact on exercise remains a topic of debate.

Marijuana’s influence on exercise stems from its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Dr. Ashok Kumar Jain from Artemis Hospital explains that THC and CBD modulate pain perception and anxiety levels. By activating cannabinoid receptors, THC decreases pain sensitivity, while CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties alleviate post-exercise soreness.

Additionally, THC’s euphoric effects temporarily reduce stress and anxiety, complemented by CBD’s calming properties. Psychiatrist Dr. Guru Gupta emphasizes the short-lived nature of these effects, cautioning against relying on marijuana as a long-term solution for anxiety.

Despite its potential benefits, marijuana isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for exercise-related issues. While some individuals may find relief from pain and anxiety, others might experience heightened anxiety levels.
