FBR finalizes tax collection plan for 3.5 million retailers

According to reports, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) plans to adopt a strategy to tax retailers in Pakistan with the goal of broadening the tax base.

This taxing effort, which is based on shop size and annual income, is projected to register 3.5 million shopkeepers using the “Dost App,” providing an estimated Rs300 billion to national revenue.

Initially, the tax will be imposed on retailers in the four province capitals, with an estimated revenue of Rs100 billion.

It is noteworthy that, in December 2023, the FBR reached a historic milestone by collecting Rs1.021 trillion, with a net collection of Rs984 billion after accounting for Rs38 billion in refunds issued in the month.

The decision to tax merchants is consistent with the country’s overall goal of broadening its tax base.
