Fire at Delhi’s children hospital kills six newborn babies

A fire at a children’s hospital in Delhi has resulted in the deaths of six newborn babies, with people heroically charging into the blaze to rescue the infants, police reported on Sunday.

Senior police officer Surendra Choudhary stated that all 12 newborns were rescued with the help of others, but six were declared dead upon reaching medical attention. Legal action is being pursued against the hospital’s owner.

The fire, which broke out late Saturday at the New Born Baby Care hospital in the Vivek Vihar area, also saw another baby among the 12 die before the fire began, Choudhary noted without further details.

Delhi Fire Department Director Atul Garg said 14 fire trucks were dispatched to combat the blaze, as reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI). The rapid spread of the fire was attributed to an explosion in an oxygen cylinder.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his sorrow, calling the incident “heartbreaking.” He assured that the causes are being investigated and those responsible for the negligence will face consequences.
