First transgender appointed to political party’s central cabinet in Pakistan

For the first time in Pakistan, a transgender individual has been included in a political party’s central cabinet. According to reports, Mehrub Moiz Awan was appointed to the cabinet by ANP during inter-party elections at the Bacha Khan centre, where the entire cabinet formation was finalized through consensus.

In the cabinet, Transgender Mehrub Moiz Awan will serve as the Secretary for Transgender Affairs. Mehrub Moiz Awan obtained a Masters in Public Health from a university in Washington D.C. and later acquired an MBBS degree from Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. Currently, Mehrub Moiz Awan is also serving as the Director of Policy and Gender at Gender Interact Alliance. Previously, she has served at the World Bank and various hospitals.

Mehrub Moiz Awan has no brothers and has six sisters, all of whom are doctors. Speaking to Geo News, She expressed gratitude for the continuous support of her parents throughout her life, attributing her success to their support.

She stated that she is highly optimistic and passionate about receiving responsibilities within the ANP and is dedicated to increasing representation and advocacy for her community in politics. The party is committed to equal rights and is a progressive party; therefore, choosing ANP for political participation.
