‘GB ex-chief judge Rana Shamim hid age to become judge’

Former chief justice Anwar Jamali’s letter says Shamim’s date of birth changed in bar council records

A letter written by former Supreme Court chief justice (Retired) Anwar Zaheer Jamali has disclosed that former Gilgit-Baltistan chief judge Rana Shamim hid his correct age in order to become an additional judge of the Sindh High Court.

According to media reports, Anwar Zaheer Jamali, a former chief justice of the Supreme Court, revealed in a letter to the Sindh governor that Rana Shamim had turned over 62 years of age at the time of his appointment as a judge.

The media report, however, did not mention the identity of the Sindh governor, nor the time the letter was written.

The letter stated that Shamim’s date of birth was changed from 1946 to 1950 in the bar council records. Jamali wrote that Shamim’s truthfulness was dubious and his performance left a lot to be desired.

The former chief justice added that Rana Shamim was not suitable to be appointed as a high court judge nor was he apt for becoming a permanent judge.

Meanwhile, the date for the framing of charges against Rana Shamim has been set by the Islamabad High Court as January 7, 2022. The charges will be put against the former GB chief judge and others in a case related to an affidavit wherein there were accusations of judicial meddling against former Supreme Court chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar.

The development comes through a hearing headed by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah on Monday.

During the proceedings, Shamim’s original affidavit was presented in court. Attorney-General of Pakistan (AJP) Khalid Javed Khan stated that Shamim must apprise the court who was present when he notarized the affidavit, along with who leaked the affidavit.

While talking to media outside the court, Shamim said that he was alone when the affidavit was notarized.

A local media organization had earlier reported that PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif was present when affidavit was notarized.
