Hearing on petition against suspension of X postponed

The Lahore High Court postponed the hearing on a petition against the suspension of X (formerly Twitter) until after Eid al-Fitr.

Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan of the Lahore High Court heard the request filed by journalist Shakir Mahmood which included the federal government and others as respondents.

The petitioner argued that curtailing the freedom of any citizen constitutionally was impermissible asserting that shutting down X equated to depriving individuals of their freedom and fundamental rights.

The request urged the court to order the restoration of X’s services.

During the hearing, a junior counsel representing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) informed the court that senior counsel were engaged in proceedings at the Islamabad High Court and requested that the case be adjourned.

Subsequently due to the absence of lawyers, the court further postponed the hearing on the petition against the suspension of the social media app X (Twitter) until after Eid.

The decision to delay the proceedings underscores the significance of the case and highlights the ongoing debate surrounding freedom of expression and digital rights in Pakistan. With the hearing now scheduled post-Eid, stakeholders await further developments in this matter of considerable public interest.
