On Sunday, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) sent a notice cautioning students not to apply to two-year programs that have been phased out as of the 2019–2020 academic year.

“Two-year BA/Sc and MA/MSc programs with extended deadlines of the academic year 2019 and June 30, 2022” have been phased out, HEC said on its official Instagram account.

The notification disclosed that, in defiance of HEC’s directives, several post-secondary educational establishments accepted students enrolled in these phased-out programs beyond the designated timeframes.

It further recommended against enrolling in these programs for parents, students, and stakeholders because “degrees obtained from such programs do not qualify for recognition and attestation by HEC.”

The official statement from the HEC states that the decision to do away with the two-year degree programs was made in 2004 to raise the caliber of degree programs to meet international standards.

However, the commission had given the universities till 2016 to phase down the aforementioned programs.

The two-year associate degree programs, which equated to 14 years of education, were approved by the HEC to replace the bachelor of arts (BA) and bachelor of science (BSc) degree programs.

The fifth semester of a four-year bachelor’s program is open to graduates of associate degree programs.
