Horror story from Avicenna Medical College

Allegations of mistreatment, maltreatment, and possible suicide have sparked protests among students at Avicenna Medical College in Lahore.

The recent death of a fourth-year student named Mahnoor, initially attributed to heart failure, is now claimed by students to be a result of mistreatment, potentially leading to suicide.

Accusations include the denial of medical leaves to Mahnoor, prompting widespread concern among the student body.

These allegations extend beyond Mahnoor’s case, with claims of abuses at Avicenna Medical College being shared on social media platforms.

An Instagram account, thenewspaper.pk, has posted slides detailing alleged mistreatment orchestrated by the college chairman, Abdul Waheed Sheikh, and his daughters, who hold significant administrative positions.

Allegations include imposing heavy fines, denying leave requests, and subjecting students to verbal abuse.

Furthermore, a presentation titled “Horrors at Avicenna: Student Testimonials and Evidence” includes audio recordings purportedly revealing Abdul Waheed Sheikh’s verbal abuse towards a student, along with the use of derogatory language.

The recording captures the student apologizing while asserting that his name was incorrectly placed on a list.

Additionally, footage surfaced showing Sheikh ripping a student’s shirt due to improper tucking. The presentation further underscored incidents where female students faced mistreatment and character defamation for not wearing a dupatta.

Simultaneously, demonstrators congregated outside the college on Monday, urging an inquiry into the allegations and seeking justice for Mahnoor.

In reaction, the college proprietor spoke to the media, expressing apprehension for the students’ welfare and asserting that steps have been initiated to redress their concerns.
