Ideal duration of sleep for health is how many hours daily?

A recent study conducted in Australia by Swinburne University of Technology has shed light on the ideal duration of various activities throughout the day for maintaining good health. The study which included over two thousand participants analyzed the duration of sitting, sleeping, standing and engaging in physical exercise.

According to the findings of the research, the following durations are considered ideal for different activities. It is recommended to sleep for approximately 8 hours and 20 minutes per day for optimal health. Sitting for a maximum of 6 hours per day is considered ideal. Standing for about 5 hours and 10 minutes per day is recommended. Engaging in light physical activities such as household chores, for around 2 hours and 10 minutes per day is beneficial for health. Participating in moderate to vigorous physical activities such as brisk walking or jogging for approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes per day is also recommended.

The study emphasizes the importance of allocating specific durations for different activities throughout the day to promote overall health. It suggests that maintaining a balance between sedentary behaviour and physical activity is crucial for well-being.

Furthermore, the researchers highlighted the significance of certain health indicators including waist circumference and fasting blood glucose levels in assessing overall health. They found that altering sedentary time to include light physical activities can help regulate blood glucose levels.

Moreover, reducing sedentary time by incorporating periods of restful sleep can also benefit health outcomes. While achieving zero sitting time may not be feasible for everyone, the study suggests minimizing prolonged sitting periods ideally not exceeding 6 hours per day.

The results of this study were published in the journal Diabetologia emphasizing the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to enhance longevity and well-being. By adhering to the recommended durations for sleep, sitting, standing and physical activity, individuals can take proactive steps towards maintaining optimal health.
