IHC extends injunction on trial of illegal marriage case

Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday extended the stay on the trial of the illegal marriage case filed against Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Aamer Farooq considered the petitions of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi seeking the dismissal of complaints in the Nikah case. Salman Akram Raja, the lawyer for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, was unable to appear in court, and his assistant counsel requested an adjournment until the next week.

On the other hand, Raja Rizwan Abbasi, representing Bushra Bibi’s ex-husband Khawar Manika, requested the lifting of the injunction on the trial. Abbasi argued that since no one returns to the court after obtaining such relief, the court should schedule the case for arguments the next day.

In response, Justice Aamer Farooq cautioned against making such statements, noting that three lawyers from their side were present in the court.

The court decided to adjourn the hearing while extending the prohibition on the trial of the marriage case during the Iddat period until January 31. It directed the trial court not to record the statements of witnesses until January 31, stating that the stay on the trial would remain in effect until that date.

It is noteworthy that Khawar Manika had filed a case of illegal marriage against former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi.
