IHC extends stay order against ECP’s notices to Imran Khan

Court grants interim bail to PTI chief in 10 cases till 30th

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday extended its stay order till August 22 in petitions filed by PTI chief Imran Khan and Asad Umar challenging ECP’s notices over alleged violation of rules during KP local body elections.

Acting Chief Justice Aamer Farooq heard the case against the proceeding of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The associate lawyer informed the court that senior lawyer Barrister Ali Zafar could not attend the proceeding due to his engagements in the Lahore High Court.

He prayed the court to postpone hearing till the next date. The court adjourned the case till August 22, while extending its stay order against the ECP’s proceedings.

It may be mentioned here that the ECP had served notices to Imran Khan, when he was prime minister, and Asad Umar for campaigning during local body elections in KP.

However, the notices were challenged before the IHC and the court had granted stay order against the ECP proceeding.

Separately, a lower court of Islamabad on Thursday extended interim bail of Imran Khan till July 30 in ten FIRs registered against him in connection with the party’s long march. District and Session Judge Kamran Basharrat Mufti heard the pre-arrest bail plea of Imran Khan. Petitioner’s lawyer Tajamal Hussain requested the court to grant one-time exemption from personal appearance to his client, which was accepted.

The counsel also filed a plea to seek interim bail for Imran Khan in another case registered by the Kohsar Police Station. The court remarked that it was necessary for the accused to appear in person before it for the relief.

The lawyer also informed the court that senior counsel Dr Baber Awan was abroad that’s why he couldn’t appear.

The judge, however, extended interim bail of Imran Khan till July 30 in ten FIRs. The court also adjourned the matter till July 30.
