IHC rejects Gilani’s appeal against Sanjrani’s election

Former PM Gilani submitted an intra court appeal seeking annulment of Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani’s election

The Islamabad High Court has overruled the intra court appeal of former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party leader Yousuf Raza Gilani seeking cancellation of the election of Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani.

A local media outlet reported that the high court on Friday pronounced the verdict which was reserved yesterday.

A two-judge bench of the Islamabad High Court consisting of Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jehangiri reserved the verdict on former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s appeal.

Previously, a single bench heard Gilani’s appeal and rejected it after it declared it not maintainable.

The court had reserved its judgement on the former premier’s intra court appeal on Dec 22, 2021. But the IHC decided to hear the case again so that it can deliberate further on some points. The Islamabad High Court reserved its verdict on the appeal yesterday.

Gilani, who also contested the election of Senate chairman, was defeated by Sanjrani after the presiding officer rejected seven votes that had been cast in favor of the former prime minister.

According to the IHC verdict, Sanjrani will continue to remain as chairman Senate.
