The world’s first floating city is emerging amidst the azure waters of the Indian Ocean off the coast of Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Positioned just a 10-minute boat ride from the government seat, this visionary project is rapidly taking shape with satellite images revealing the initial stages of construction.
In collaboration with Water Studios, the Maldivian government is spearheading this groundbreaking initiative not as a mere experiment or futuristic concept but as a practical solution to mitigate the rising threats posed by sea-level rise.
Comprising 1,190 islands, the Maldives ranks among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Experts estimate that due to the encroachment of rising seas, the entire nation could be submerged by the end of the century.
However, the floating city offers a beacon of hope providing a safe haven even amidst the escalating sea levels. The city’s construction is slated for completion by 2027 with habitation potentially commencing as early as 2025 pending resolution of certain logistical challenges that delayed the original timeline.
The city will feature 5,000 modular housing units accommodating a population of up to 20,000 residents. These dwellings will be prefabricated in a local shipyard and transported to the new city where they will be anchored and connected by underwater concrete structures.
To ensure sustainability, the city will harness solar energy for electricity generation while deep-water cooling systems will be employed as an alternative to conventional air conditioning. Residents will have various transportation options including boats, bicycles, electric scooters or even walking paths.
