Imtiaz Ali was scared of Amar Singh Chamkila’s wife?

Imtiaz Ali recently shared his apprehensions about the reaction of the late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila’s first wife during a screening of his film.

In an interview, the director expressed concern about how Chamkila’s family, especially his first wife Gurmail Kaur, would perceive the film.

He recounted being seated next to her during the screening and pondering whether to retreat due to the sensitive nature of certain scenes.

However, to his relief, Kaur embraced him after the movie concluded, indicating her approval of the portrayal.

Ali emphasized that the film does not gloss over Chamkila’s controversial aspects but portrays him authentically.

Despite acknowledging Chamkila’s controversial actions, Ali credited the family for understanding and accepting the portrayal.

The film, centered on the real-life story of Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife Amarjot, features Diljit Dosanjh as Chamkila and Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot.

The couple’s tragic assassination in 1988, as they arrived at a traditional event, serves as a focal point in the narrative, highlighting the repercussions of Chamkila’s provocative music in the face of extremist threats.
