Three days ago, Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate change activist, was arrested twice during protests in The Hague.
Images of her being taken away by police circulated widely, with one particularly viral picture later revealed to be digitally manipulated.
This manipulated image, showing Thunberg alongside American actress Sydney Sweeney, garnered millions of views and likes on social media.
Users pointed out that the picture had been altered to exaggerate Thunberg’s features.
In reality, Thunberg was involved in a protest against fossil fuel subsidies and was later released.
The protest escalated into a confrontation with police, some of whom were on horseback, attempting to clear a main road.
News outlets such as Reuters, BBC, DW, and The Associated Press confirmed that the image was indeed doctored, originating from genuine footage of Thunberg’s arrest in The Hague.
