Italian defense minister emphasizes halting Houthi attacks in Red Sea

The Italian defense minister emphasized the necessity of halting Yemen’s Houthi assaults on Red Sea shipping, cautioning against inciting further conflict while addressing the increased aggression from the Iranian-backed militia targeting commercial vessels.

According to the US military’s Central Command, 21 drones and missiles fired by the Houthis towards international Red Sea shipping lanes were intercepted by US and British forces on Tuesday, marking the 26th attack of its kind since November 19.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Minister Crosetto conveyed concerns about the potential escalation, stating, “It is a significant problem, a result of other ongoing conflicts. I am reluctant to initiate a third front of war amidst current tensions in Ukraine and Gaza.”

The Houthis have remained steadfast in their intent to persist with these attacks until Israel ceases its actions in Gaza. Moreover, they have warned of retaliating against US warships if the militia group faces reprisals in Yemen.
