Chris Jordan is poised to make a comeback to the England squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with the announcement scheduled for Tuesday.
Jordan, who last played for England in the T20 format against New Zealand in 2023, missed the Caribbean tour due to injury but has been included as a bowler capable of contributing with the bat lower down the order, particularly in the absence of Jamie Overton.
This recall is expected to result in disappointment for Chris Woakes, who has yet to feature for Punjab Kings in the IPL this season.
Additionally, Ben Duckett has secured a spot as England’s reserve batter, while Tom Hartley is anticipated to be chosen over Rehan Ahmed as the second frontline spinner alongside Adil Rashid.
Jordan’s selection is based on his extensive experience, having participated in five previous World Cups and served as Surrey’s T20 captain for two seasons.
Despite the likelihood of limited game time in the Caribbean, his prowess as a fielder and a dependable death bowler are valued assets.
Overton, initially considered as a genuine allrounder, was closely monitored by England but has been omitted from the provisional squad due to inconclusive scans on a back injury.
Jordan’s recent improvement with the bat has bolstered his case for selection, boasting an impressive average of 30.05 and a strike rate of 160.53 since the start of the 2023 Vitality Blast.
Despite missing out on England’s T20I series against West Indies, Jordan remained active during the winter season, representing various franchises in leagues such as the BBL, ILT20, and Pakistan Super League.
He will have the opportunity to fine-tune his skills ahead of the World Cup during England’s four-match T20I series against Pakistan starting May 22.
England’s provisional squad is expected to include a formidable top four comprising Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Will Jacks, and Jonny Bairstow, all of whom have been in sensational form in the IPL.
Jofra Archer, despite his prolonged absence due to an elbow injury, is also likely to feature in the squad, with hopes for his return to international cricket during the Pakistan series.
However, England will be without the services of Ben Stokes, who announced his unavailability as he continues his rehabilitation following knee surgery.
