Karachi traders beset by extortion and crime, says PTI

Traders from and in Karachi are finding it increasingly difficult to do business in the city with as much as 25 incidents of extortion having been reported in the city, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Karachi office said on Tuesday.

In a series of sternly worded tweets, the PTI regional office pointed that many incidents were not reported as traders were fearful for their lives. It added that the year had been one of bad governance for the Sindh government and that extortion, terrorism, kidnapping and targeted killings were issues it must deal with.

It added that numerous traders had been moving their businesses to other city for the same reasons.

The PTI’s Karachi office said that the Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government had no policy to maintain law and order in the city and could not protect its traders. It said that PPP had been looting the city for over a decade.

The development comes a few days after a local news outlet quoted Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab as saying that the city had seen a rise in crime during the past year.

Incidents such as mobile snatching, motorcycle and carjacking along with murders had risen according to statistics released by the police. However, the administrator said that the law and order situation was now better than it was in 2013-14.
