KP government commits Rs29bn for wheat procurement from farmers

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has committed to purchasing 0.3 million metric tons of wheat valued at Rs29 billion directly from farmers. The procurement campaign is scheduled to commence on May 7, with payments processed through a newly introduced wheat procurement app, ensuring swift transactions within 24 hours.

Stating transparency, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Minister Zahir Shah Toro reiterated his pledge to oversee a fair procurement process.

Earlier, on April 27, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had announced its intention to procure 300 thousand metric tons of locally produced wheat.

Meanwhile, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari confirmed the Punjab government’s intention to purchase wheat from farmers, although the quantity to be procured remains undecided.

In response to concerns regarding large-scale wheat imports, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif established an inquiry committee, the findings of which are due to be submitted today.
