Kung Fu Panda helps makers set new box office record

Kung Fu Panda 4 has amassed approximately $503.5 million in global box office revenue, propelling DreamWorks Animation to the forefront as the studio with the most animated franchises to surpass the $2 billion milestone.

According to a report by Deadline, the franchise’s box office success has secured its position as the seventh highest-grossing animated franchise in history.

Actor Jack Black reprised his role as the voice of Po, the beloved anthropomorphic panda who rose to become a kung fu master, in the animated series that debuted in 2008.

The latest installment, released in March, debuted with an impressive $57.9 million in domestic box office earnings during its opening weekend, making it DreamWorks Animation’s second-best opening, trailing only behind the original film, which grossed $60.2 million in its first three days.

With the success of Kung Fu Panda alongside franchises like Shrek and Madagascar, DreamWorks Animation now holds the distinction of owning the most animated franchises to surpass the $2 billion mark.

Furthermore, the film’s profitability has paved the way for the likely production of Kung Fu Panda 5, as the recent installment was notably the most cost-effective film in the franchise, boasting a budget of $85 million.

Despite not surpassing the box office earnings of some of its predecessors within the DreamWorks franchises, Kung Fu Panda 4 stands out in terms of profitability.

Among the three DreamWorks Animation franchises, the fourth installment reigns supreme as the highest-grossing movie released in the 2020s thus far.
