Lahore High Court chief justice vows disposal of frivolous cases on first hearing

Lahore High Court Chief Justice Malik Shahzad, presiding over a meeting of all district and session judges of Punjab, said the judges should expedite legal proceedings and ensure the delivery of quality justice.

Addressing the assembled judges, Chief Justice Malik Shahzad said judicial processes would be streamlined and bogus cases would be dispised of on first hearing. He underscored that absenteeism would not be tolerated, stressing that any laxity in attendance would result in disciplinary measures.

An integral aspect of the proposed reforms is the introduction of video link hearings in district judiciary, aimed at facilitating accessibility and reducing procedural delays. Justice Malik Shahzad emphasised the importance of judicial officers actively participating in court proceedings, cautioning against any negligence in this regard.

Furthermore, the Chief Justice outlined plans to revamp the curriculum of the Punjab Judicial Academy, aiming to enhance training standards and equip judicial officers with the necessary skills for effective adjudication. Recognizing exemplary performance, he announced intentions to institute a system of commendation for diligent officers, while simultaneously implementing measures to curb corruption within the district judiciary.

To ensure punctuality and accountability, Justice Malik Shahzad disclosed intentions to introduce a biometric attendance system for judicial officers, alongside collaborative efforts with the Punjab Bar Council to discourage strike actions that disrupt court proceedings.

In a stern stance against obstruction of justice, he unequivocally stated that court closures and acts of contempt would be met with swift repercussions. Urging expedited resolutions for longstanding cases, the Chief Justice underscored the importance of timely justice delivery, reinforcing the judiciary’s commitment to efficiency and fairness.
