The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday ordered three days of weekly holidays in schools.

The court sought a notification from the Punjab government by tomorrow. In the hearing of the case related to measures to control smog the court also directed Deputy Commissioner Lahore to appear tomorrow and adjourned the hearing till then.

Meanwhile, the Punjab School Education Department has issued policy guidelines on the worsening smog situation in Punjab.

It was made mandatory for students and teachers to wear face masks. Wearing glasses in classrooms and students were banned from rubbing their eyes.

Outdoor activities were restricted on school premises and spraying water was made mandatory. It also banned the burning of any kind of material within the boundaries of schools.

Earlier, in a previous hearing Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court had suggested on Friday that he would impose a three-day school holiday and two weeks of work from home while also asking the Punjab administration for proposals on how to reduce the smog.

Justice Karim at the time had stated that the court will issue an order after considering the advice provided by the relevant ministries. The judge also requested a report on the revision or enhancement of the current regulations to address the industrial sector.
