LHC serves notice to ECP on Shah Mehmood’s appeal

On Thursday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) took action by issuing notices to the election commission and other concerned parties in response to Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers.

Numerous prospective election candidates are filing constitutional petitions challenging decisions made by appellate tribunals in high courts across the country. In the Lahore High Court alone, more than 60 decisions of these tribunals have been contested.

During the proceedings, the LHC bench addressed Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s petitions, which focused on the rejection of his nomination papers for NA-150, NA-151, and PP-218. The court has summoned the election commission and other involved parties in the case for tomorrow (Friday), acknowledging the significance of the matter.

Additionally, the LHC is currently overseeing the constitutional petitions of 38 candidates who are challenging decisions made by election tribunals. This comprehensive review by the full bench is ongoing.

Yesterday, the high court had already served notices to the election commission and other parties in response to 24 constitutional petitions. The legal proceedings are unfolding against the backdrop of the upcoming elections, intensifying the scrutiny of decisions made by electoral bodies and tribunals.

In a related development, the Sindh High Court rejected the petition of an independent candidate from the PS-76 constituency of the Sindh Assembly. The court has summoned replies from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and others on January 14 in response to a petition filed by PML-Q candidate Mashooq Ali from the same constituency.
