Mardan mayor shuts down KFC franchise over Jamaat-e-Islami’s pressure

Mardan Mayor Himayat Ullah, along with several public officials, enforced the closure of the sole KFC franchise in the district on Thursday. This action followed a “verbal resolution” passed by the council, citing alleged support from the American fast-food chain to Israel in the Gaza conflict.

The development occurs 48 hours after Jamaat-e-Islami issued a two-day ultimatum to the district administration.

Mayor Himayat, affiliated with the Awami National Party, initiated the resolution within the 127-member local council, with 70 representatives present. He addressed supporters outside the outlet on Nowshera Road, emphasizing the boycott of all Israeli products.

Protesters outside echoed sentiments against those backing Israel, labeling them as traitors and advocating for the boycott of Israeli goods.
