Mari Petroleum reveals major gas discovery in North Waziristan

Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MARI) has announced the finding of gas reserves at the Shewa-2 well in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district.

On November 1, 2023, the company declared that the well had been successfully drilled to a depth of 4,577 meters.

The goal of the exploration was to evaluate the Lockhart and Hangu formations, which were previously discovered in the Shewa-1 well, as well as to examine the hydrocarbon potential of exploratory targets, specifically the Samanasuk and Kawagarh formations.

“During the Drill Stem Test (DST) carried out in the Kawagarh formation (exploratory target), gas flowed at a sustainable rate of 0.607 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) at wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 97 pounds per square inch (Psi) at 32/64-inch choke size,” stated the company.

This find in the Kawagarh formation adds to recent discoveries of hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs in the Lockhart and Hangu formations.

According to Mari, the Lockhart formation in the Shewa-2 well was tested at a 38/64-inch choke size and a gas flow rate of 51 MMSCFD and 391 barrels of condensate per day at a WHFP of 5,972 Psi.
