Medical students rally against alleged maltreatment leading to student’s death at private medical college

Students at a private medical college in Lahore are protesting following allegations that a student’s recent death was a result of maltreatment by the institution, possibly leading to suicide.

The incident involves a fourth-year student named Mahnoor, whose death was initially reported as heart failure but is now claimed to be suicide due to denied medical leaves and alleged mistreatment.

Reports suggest students faced harsh punishments, including having shirts ripped, phones broken, and being made to sit on cold floors for hours as part of a “Pink List” punishment system.

Additionally, heavy fines, such as Mahnoor’s Rs90,000 penalty, were allegedly imposed for minor violations.

The protests demand an investigation into the college’s conduct, with signs calling for justice for Mahnoor.

In response, the college owner, referring to students as his “grandchildren,” claims to have addressed their demands.

It’s important to support individuals showing signs of self-harm or suicidal tendencies by ensuring they’re not alone, removing harmful objects, and encouraging professional help. Helplines like Mind Organisation and Umang offer support for those in need.
