Morocco says ready to deliberate petition to halt normalisation with Israel

The Moroccan government announced on Wednesday its readiness to discuss a petition calling for the suspension of normalization with Israel.

Mustafa Baytas, the government spokesman, mentioned after a cabinet meeting that they are prepared to deliberate on the petition.

Human rights activists are planning to submit a petition urging the government to cease normalizing relations with Israel. In Morocco, petitions serve as a means for citizens to advocate for public policy changes or the cancellation of agreements.

According to Moroccan law, a government committee reviews submitted petitions and decides whether to accept or reject them.

For a petition to be considered by the committee, it must be signed by 5,000 people. Mustafa Baytas explained that petitions are organized under the 2011 Constitution, providing citizens with the opportunity to express their opinions on development issues or request the enactment of legislation and laws.

Morocco became the fourth Arab country to normalize ties with Israel in 2020, following the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan.

Regarding the situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories, conflicts have resulted in a significant number of casualties and displacements. The UN reports that about 85% of Gazans have been displaced, facing food insecurity, while aid delivery to the territory remains a challenge.
