Netanyahu on US threat to withhold arms: Israel will fight with its ‘fingernails’ if needed

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted on Thursday that the US threat to withhold certain arms would not deter Israel from pursuing its offensive in Gaza, hinting at a potential invasion of Rafah despite objections from its closest ally. President Joe Biden has urged Israel against such an operation, fearing it would worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Netanyahu stated Israel’s readiness to proceed independently if necessary. Additionally, Israel’s military spokesperson downplayed the impact of any arms holdup, stating that the army has the necessary resources for its planned missions. The looming threat of a Rafah invasion has raised concerns among aid groups, with warnings of catastrophic consequences for the already distressed population.

The situation has further complicated ceasefire efforts led by the US, Qatar, and Egypt. Meanwhile, analysts suggest that Biden’s firm stance against Israel could undermine its negotiating position and embolden Hamas’ demands. The conflict, initiated by Hamas’ attack into southern Israel, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
