Pakistan recovers Rs84bln from power thieves, defaulters in crackdown

Pakistan has managed to reclaim Rs86 billion through a nationwide crackdown on power theft, as per data disclosed by the Power Division on Sunday.

In a bid to curb losses in the power sector, both the interim government and military leadership initiated a nationwide operation against power thieves in September.

Since September 1, over 65,000 individuals have been apprehended, and a fine of Rs86 billion has been collected during this nationwide crackdown on power theft.

In a separate development, sources reveal that the federal government has finalized plans to privatize profitable power distribution companies (Discos). According to sources within the power division, the coalition government led by Shehbaz Sharif has completed the blueprint for privatizing five profitable power companies.

These companies include Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).

As part of the first phase, the government intends to establish a new board for these power companies. The privatization ministry has submitted a proposal to the cabinet, suggesting the formation of a high-powered 12-member board to oversee the privatization process of Discos.
