Pakistan-US talks conclude first round, deliberate on bilateral relations and security issues

The inaugural round of discussions between Pakistan and the United States concluded at the Foreign Office, centering on bilateral relations, regional dynamics, and security concerns.

Led by Acting Under Secretary for Political Affairs John Bass, accompanied by US Ambassador Donald Bloom, the American delegation engaged in detailed assessments aimed at enhancing the ties between the two nations. This visit marks the first high-level American delegation to Pakistan since the current government came into power.

The discussions, focused on mutual interests, regional stability, and security challenges, underscored the significance of robust diplomatic engagement in addressing shared concerns.

The American delegation, comprising three members, arrived from Doha and is scheduled to depart tonight after constructive deliberations with Pakistani officials.

During his two-day visit to Islamabad, Under Secretary John Bass’s agenda included meetings with senior Pakistani officials to explore avenues for bolstering cooperation under the US-Pakistan Partnership Framework.

The discussions also encompassed regional security issues, particularly in the context of Afghanistan’s evolving landscape. Notably, Qatar’s pivotal role in hosting the Doha talks, which led to the landmark 2020 agreement between the US and the Taliban, was acknowledged.

John Bass’s extensive diplomatic experience, including his tenure as US Ambassador to Afghanistan and Turkey, underscores his nuanced understanding of the political dynamics in allied states.

The talks also touched upon economic prospects, with both countries expressing ambitions to elevate their trade relations from $2 billion to $10 billion annually. However, the US issued a cautious statement, expressing apprehensions about potential sanctions stemming from increased trade with Iran.
