Islamabad: Islamabad-based pharmaceutical company Bio Labs has recalled two medications due to their substandard quality as reported by the Central Drug Laboratory in Karachi.

According to the report, one batch of Mebuzole suspension 100 mg and one batch of Bio-Ris oral solution 1 mg have been deemed substandard. Mebuzole is used for the treatment of ulcers.

The laboratory issued an alert stating that the presence of ethylene glycol in these medications poses a significant risk. Ethylene glycol even in small amounts can be lethal causing damage to the heart, kidneys and central nervous system.

The alert from the laboratory indicated that Mebuzole batches contained 1.21% and 1.32% ethylene glycol while the Bio-Ris batch contained 0.84% ethylene glycol.

As a result of the alert, a ban has been imposed on the sale of these batches. The pharmaceutical company has been directed not to supply the affected batches to the market and to recall the existing batches from the market.
