Police arrest scores of protesters at Columbia, Texas universities

Police in Austin, Texas, clashed with students at UT Austin as they dismantled a protest encampment against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Similar actions occurred at Columbia University in New York City.

The protesters demand their universities cut ties with Israel, citing alleged genocide against Palestinians. The clashes resulted in dozens of arrests, adding to nearly 1,000 across various campuses.

At UT Austin, about 40 demonstrators were arrested on charges like trespassing and disorderly conduct. Some confrontations involved riot gear, pepper spray, and flash-bang devices.

The university cited that many protesters were not affiliated and that encampments are prohibited. Students remain defiant, expressing determination to continue their protests.
