President Alvi accepts resignation of SC’s Justice Mazahar Naqvi

President Dr. Arif Alvi has officially accepted the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi.

The decision to accept the resignation was made based on the prime minister’s advice under Article 179 of the Constitution, which pertains to the retiring age of justices.

Justice Naqvi, who is currently facing ‘misconduct’ allegations in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), had submitted his resignation to President Dr. Arif Alvi on Wednesday. In his resignation letter, Justice Naqvi expressed that it had been an honor to serve as a Lahore High Court and Supreme Court judge but cited an inability to continue discharging his duties.

The Supreme Court had earlier rejected a plea on Tuesday seeking to stay the Supreme Judicial Council’s proceedings against Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi. The complaint filed with the judicial council had been initiated by Mian Dawood Advocate. Justice Naqvi’s resignation comes amid ongoing legal proceedings related to misconduct allegations.

In April, Justice Isa and Justice Masood had submitted a judicial letter to then-Chief Justice Bandial, urging the convening of an SJC meeting to review the allegations. In May, the matter was referred to Justice Tariq Masood for a legal opinion by the then-Chief Justice Bandial.
