Punjab government pledges to curb unnecessary use of antibiotics

Lahore: The Punjab government has pledged to curb the unnecessary use of antibiotics in the province.

Under the supervision of Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir, a meeting was held in the province to address the unnecessary use of antibiotics during which a commitment was made to prevent their misuse.

Health Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir stated in the meeting that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics is costing human lives. To prevent the unnecessary use of antibiotics, a decision has been made to consult with the Health Care Commission and DRAP.

The Health Minister instructed to provide recommendations within a week after consulting with the Drug Control Wing, PHC and DRAP and these recommendations will be presented to the top authorities for final approval.

Khawaja Imran Nazir also mentioned in the meeting that a decision has been made to regulate the sale of antibiotics and addictive drugs in medical stores.

It is worth noting that a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that in 2019, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics resulted in the deaths of 60,000 individuals in Pakistan.
