Reciting Quran on laptop or mobile screen without ablution

It is said that reciting the Quran on a laptop or mobile screen without ablution or purity is permissible. Similarly, can women recite the Quran without touching it during their specific days? Is this correct? Can a person recite Surah Yaseen on the screen without ablution and purity, and can they touch the screen?

Having a zeal for reciting the Quran is not only a virtue but a form of goodness itself. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Verily, actions are by intentions and each person will have what they intended. So whoever migrated for Allah and His Messenger, then their migration is for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever migrated for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then their migration is for whatever they migrated for.” (Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabir by At-Tabarani: 5942). By being better than the act of intention, it means that when a believer intends a good deed, their intention is sincere and righteous. However, sometimes there may be shortcomings or flaws in the action.

(1)It is prohibited to touch the Quran (meaning the sacred manuscript) without ablution and purity. However, reciting verbally without ablution is contrary to the recommended and preferable act but it is permissible. Since the Quranic verses are not inscribed on the screen of a mobile, laptop or computer, it is merely software. Therefore, reciting the Quran on software is permissible. If turning the page is required while reciting on software, avoid touching the part of the software where the verses are visible. Turn the page by touching the sides.

As stated abovez it is better to recite with ablution and purity but reciting verbally or on the screen without ablution is contrary to the recommended and preferable act but it is permissible. Sometimes, people are traveling and may be reciting from their laptop screen without ablution. In any case, this is permissible but it is preferable to recite with ablution whenever possible.

(2)It is forbidden for women to recite the Quran during specific days and also to touch the Quran. However, if it is necessary to recite it while holding it, it should be held with a clean cloth. Some Quranic verses contain supplications such as:

1. “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 201)
2. “My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.” (Surah Ibrahim: 40)
3. “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” (Surah Al-Anbiya: 87)
4. “My Lord, indeed I am overpowered, so help.” (Surah Al-Qamar: 10)
5. “My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women.” (Surah Nuh: 28)

Such Quranic words cannot be recited with the intention of recitation but they can be recited with the intention of supplication.
