Reforms in FBR is government’s top priority for economic revival, says Minister Tarar

Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazir Tarar, emphasized that introducing reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to tackle the economic crisis remains the foremost priority of the current government, aligning with the vision of the Prime Minister.

Speaking at a press conference, Tarar underscored that the Prime Minister is personally spearheading the reform efforts, aimed at enhancing the governance of government departments as urged by the IMF. He emphasized the necessity to curtail unnecessary expenditures and combat power and tax theft as part of the reform agenda.

Tarar addressed the recent transfers within the FBR, clarifying that they are driven by the exigencies of the officers’ roles and fall within the government’s prerogative. He urged for understanding, emphasizing that the changes are not targeted against any individual.

Highlighting the staggering backlog of tax cases amounting to over Rs2,700 billion pending in courts, Tarar stressed the need for their swift resolution. He commended the parliament’s initiative in legislating on tax tribunals, aimed at expediting and streamlining the adjudication process. Under the new law, cases below Rs20 million will be handled by the commissioner, while those exceeding this threshold will be referred to the Tribunal.

Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, hailed the recent successful visit of the Prime Minister to Saudi Arabia to participate in the World Economic Forum as a historic milestone. He emphasized the strategic significance of Saudi Arabia’s comprehensive investment planning for Pakistan, marking a pivotal juncture in bilateral relations.

Tarar lauded the tangible outcomes of the Prime Minister’s visit, including an upcoming delegation of Saudi businessmen to Pakistan, affirming the success of Pakistan’s foreign policy under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership.
