Ricky Ponting turns down India coach role

Ricky Ponting, former Australian captain, has declined the opportunity to become India’s coach, citing a mismatch with his current lifestyle and commitments.

In discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Ponting revealed that while he was approached for the role, he felt that the long-term commitment required didn’t align with his other responsibilities.

With Rahul Dravid stepping down as India’s head coach, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has set May 27 as the deadline for applications.

Ponting is among several former players considered for the position.

Presently, Ponting serves as the head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Capitals and the Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom.

Additionally, he is involved with a TV channel in Australia and serves as the head of strategy for the Hobart Hurricanes.

Although Ponting expressed interest in coaching a national team, the year-round commitment and the requirement to forego his IPL involvement make it impractical for him at this time.

Ponting mentioned other potential candidates for the role, including IPL coaches Justin Langer and Stephen Fleming, as well as Gautam Gambhir.

While Ponting’s family is supportive of him taking on the coaching role in India, he believes it doesn’t currently fit into his lifestyle and commitments.
