Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi to feature recreation of iconic songs

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated web series, “Heeramandi,” will feature recreations of classic melodies, including a song from the iconic film “Pakeezah.”

According to Pinkvilla, the music album of “Heeramandi” includes “Phool Gendwa Na Maaro,” a rendition of a song from the 1964 movie “Dooj Ka Chand.”

Originally sung by Manna Dey, Bhansali has transformed the track into a ghazal version for his series.

Another song in “Heeramandi,” titled “Nazariya Ki Maari,” is a revamped version of a track with the same title from the 1972 hit film “Pakeezah,” featuring Meena Kumari.

Bhansali has described it as a traditional inspiration, sung by Madhubanti Bagchi.

Additionally, the web series includes a melody by Sufi singer Amir Khusrau, titled “Sakal Ban,” marking the first song of “Heeramandi.”

The series marks Bhansali’s digital debut and explores the lives of courtesans in Lahore’s red-light district during pre-independent India.

Bhansali emphasized at a recent press conference that despite the shift to digital platforms, each episode of “Heeramandi” promises a cinematic masterpiece, surpassing even his own expectations.

Starring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal, Farida Jalal, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar, Adhyayan Suman, and Taha Shah, “Heeramandi” is set to premiere on Netflix on May 1st.
