Last year, the inaugural Global AI Safety Summit held at Britain’s Bletchley Park brought together a prestigious assembly of world leaders, corporate moguls and academic luminaries. Their aim? To grapple with the looming specter of AI and its potential impact on humanity. Elon Musk, Sam Altman and even representatives from China converged underscoring a global recognition of the urgency to regulate AI responsibly.

Fast forward six months and the scene is markedly different. The second AI Safety Summit primarily a virtual affair co-hosted by Britain and South Korea faces a lower turnout and a landscape coloured by questions rather than hype. The initial euphoria surrounding AI’s limitless potential has given way to sobering discussions about its limitations and the practical challenges it presents.

Martha Bennett, a senior analyst at Forrester aptly captures the sentiment, “There are some radically different approaches…it will be difficult to move beyond what was agreed at Bletchley Park.” Indeed, the broad strokes of agreement reached at the first summit now give rise to more nuanced debates about copyright, data scarcity and environmental impact.

One of the notable shifts in discourse revolves around the resources fueling AI’s development. Attention has shifted from existential risks to pragmatic concerns such as the colossal data requirements and the energy consumption of burgeoning data centers.
