Shaheen Shah Afridi declines Pakistan T20I captaincy

Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi declined to lead the national cricket team in T20Is on Saturday.

Afridi was offered the chance to captain Pakistan in T20Is but turned it down.

Recently, Afridi said he is ready for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies.

Speaking on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) podcast, Afridi said, “Our job is to bring happiness to the people. I want to see Pakistan win the World Cup in the United States and West Indies.”

He added, “I am completely fit and ready for the T20 World Cup.”

Afridi shared advice from Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten, “Gary Kirsten told me not to play for the name on the back of my shirt but for the name on the front.”

He mentioned the positive team environment and stressed the focus on achieving their goals, “The nation loves us and wants us to be victorious.”

Afridi reflected on his career highlights, “I am proud of taking six wickets against Bangladesh in the 2019 World Cup at Lords. Bowling against India in the T20 World Cup 2021 and Asia Cup 2023 are memorable moments for me.”

He also recalled the painful loss against Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2022.

Afridi appreciated the guidance of former Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed, “Sarfraz Ahmed has greatly guided me.”

“I feel lucky to represent Pakistan at such a young age and in such a short time.”

He praised his elder brother and former Test cricketer Riaz Afridi, “Riaz Afridi has played a great role in coaching me.”
