Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, is anticipated to embark on an official trip to China next month, aiming to reinvigorate the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). However, the recent surge in terrorist activity poses a significant challenge to this economic agenda.
As dates for Shehbaz’s inaugural trip since his return to the Prime Minister’s Office following elections were being finalized, a fresh terrorist attack targeted Chinese nationals in Basham on Tuesday.
An explosive-laden vehicle targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers working on the Dasu Hydroelectric power project, resulting in six casualties, including five Chinese nationals. This attack is the latest in a series targeting Chinese interests over recent years.
The frequency of attacks, including those on the Gwadar Port Authority Complex and a naval airbase, suggests a concerted effort to undermine China-Pakistan cooperation.
In light of these incidents, the security of Chinese projects and nationals will be a top priority during Shehbaz’s upcoming visit to Beijing next month, according to sources.
China has grown increasingly concerned about the security of CPEC and its citizens due to repeated attacks. In July 2021, nine engineers working on the Dasu project were killed in a suicide attack, prompting a suspension of work until Pakistan implemented stricter security measures.
While Pakistan attributed the attack to Indian and Afghan intelligence agencies, the recurrence of terrorism in the same area raises doubts about the effectiveness of security measures.
To address security concerns, Pakistan established a dedicated army division overseeing CPEC project security.
Given China’s likely serious response to the recent attack, Pakistan’s civil and military leadership promptly condemned the incident. Prime Minister Shehbaz visited the Chinese Embassy to offer condolences, promising a thorough investigation and justice for the perpetrators.
The Pakistani government vehemently denounced the terrorism, affirming its commitment to combat it alongside China. Pakistan reassured its unwavering support for Chinese nationals’ safety and security within its borders.
The joint statement emphasized the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China, pledging continued cooperation to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals, projects, and institutions in Pakistan.
