Sindh Chief Minister announces policy decisions at first cabinet meeting

At the inaugural meeting of his new cabinet, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced key decisions regarding wheat procurement targets and other pressing issues.

The Chief Minister, along with provincial ministers and advisors, discussed various matters, including the appointment of the Chairman of the Indus Rivers System Authority (IRSA). The cabinet expressed concerns, stating that appointing someone from outside the provinces or the federal government would violate the water accord.

Regarding wheat procurement, Minister Food Jam Khan Shoro reported that the department had 400,000 tons of wheat in stock and suggested setting a target of 800,000 tons. However, after deliberations, the cabinet decided on a procurement target of 900,000 tons for the 2023-24 crop season at a support price of Rs4000 per 40 kg.

The Chief Minister instructed the food department to procure 100,000 bags promptly and mobilize teams to commence wheat procurement. Commissioner Karachi Saleem Rajput briefed the cabinet on efforts to control prices of essential items, especially during Ramadan. He reported that the district administration had conducted 1500 raids since March 6, 2024, resulting in the registration of 1150 cases, sealing of 14 shops, and recovery of Rs7.14 million in fines. The Chief Minister urged cabinet members to conduct surprise visits to markets to ensure compliance with notified prices and continue crackdowns on hoarders.

Minister Home Zia Lanjar and IG Police Riffat Mukhtar provided updates on law and order, highlighting crime statistics for the province. The Chief Minister expressed concern over the persisting crime rates and directed the Home Minister to hold SHOs and SSPs accountable.

The cabinet also discussed the issue of kidnapping for ransom, attributing the rise in cases to tribal feuds. The Chief Minister instructed the Home Minister to involve relevant authorities in resolving these feuds promptly and emphasized taking strict action against perpetrators.

Regarding narcotics, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a crackdown on drug peddlers and addicts involved in street crime.

Additionally, Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon informed the cabinet about the halted Red Line project, causing inconvenience to residents. The Chief Minister directed the Transport Minister to expedite the project and address any obstacles.

Lastly, the Chief Minister instructed Minister P&D Nasir Shah to review approved development schemes stalled due to elections and ensure their timely implementation.
