Sindh High Court: Compensation for missing persons’ families

During a session presided over by a high court bench consisting of Justice Arshad Hussain and Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi, various aspects of a case were deliberated upon.

Justice Arshad Hussain highlighted a significant issue regarding the lack of compliance with court orders concerning inquiries, searches, and compensation for the families of disappeared individuals by government officials.

The court expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of both the government and the police department, particularly in relation to the case involving 11 missing persons.

Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi stated that the court had previously mandated compensation for the families of the missing persons and criticized the apparent inaction of police officers and secretaries over the past three months.

The court further raised concerns over the disrespectful treatment of its orders, citing an instance where a missing person’s whereabouts were only disclosed during the subsequent hearing, questioning the seriousness with which court directives are taken.

Justice Arshad Hussain expressed frustration over the lack of responses from various institutions despite numerous letters being sent, suggesting a sense of disregard for the court’s inquiries.

The bench also expressed dismay at the apparent lack of preparedness and knowledge exhibited by federal and provincial government lawyers when presenting cases before the court.

The government counsel informed the court that the provincial government would provide compensation for verified cases of missing persons and disclosed that a summary had been forwarded to the chief minister of Sindh for further action, as stated by the home department’s focal person.
