Spanish military planes dropped 26 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza on Wednesday, as Madrid urged Israel to open land border crossings to prevent famine, the Foreign Ministry reported.

The operation, done in partnership with Jordan and co-funded by the EU, delivered more than 11,000 food rations to alleviate severe food insecurity for up to 1.1 million people in Gaza, the ministry shared.

Despite recent tragedies and risks associated with airdrops, aid is still being sent in this manner. The UN has warned of an impending famine, and foreign governments continue to conduct airdrops as a way to demonstrate action.

Even with the dangers, many Palestinians are willing to risk their lives to receive aid packages, with some being killed in the process. The need for aid delivery by road is affirmed as it is a safer and more efficient method compared to airdrops.

A UN report has indicated that a famine in northern Gaza is imminent and could spread throughout the enclave in the coming months. Efforts are being made to increase aid flow by land and establish a sea corridor to address the growing crisis
