Sukkur youth STEM learning festival begins today with focus on climate change and youth empowerment

The three-day Sukkur Youth STEM Learning Festival will be held from Thursday(today). Thar Education Alliance is going to organize this festival in collaboration with the Sindh Education and Literacy Department (SE&LD), UNICEF, and the Reform Support Unit (RSU) at Walking Track Ground near Globe Chowk, Sukkur. It will have 10 STEM sessions, panel discussions, showcasing science models activities and stalls.

Around 50 government schools from each district of Sukkur region will participate in this festival.

Chief Executive of Thar Education Alliance and organizer of the festival, Partab Shivani, expressed that the theme of this festival is climate change and youth empowerment. Due to the recent flood, the majority of the affected areas were from this region, leading to compromised quality and quantity, both impacted by climate disruption. Two stalls in the festival will specifically focus on out-of-school children and non-formal education, aiming to encourage the government and concerned authorities to address these issues seriously, as education is their basic right.

Shivani expressed his desire to organize STEM-based activities and festivals in every district of Sindh. This marks the first time in the history of Sukkur that science and technology will be discussed. He urged the government to allocate a budget to promote STEM education for every district and school, emphasizing that it is the era of innovation. Through this approach, every child can learn through activity-based methods, growing differently and choosing their career path accordingly.

Highlighting that the government has already recruited 60 thousand teachers, Shivani said that their target audience is not only students but also teachers, who play a pivotal role in educational development. The festival will feature students presenting climate models to mobilize the community and civil society to contribute to sustainable education development. Shivani stated, “We will gather recommendations from experts during this festival and subsequently discuss them with relevant authorities, including SELD, the government, and policymakers.”
